GARDEN UPDATE: grow, grow, grow!

sori suomalaiset, en jaksa tänään puhua puutarhuroinnista suomeksi kun mun puutarhasanasto on englanniksi ja olen liian laiska kääntämään. lyhyt versio: suurin osa mun tomaateista kuoli mutta pistin hyvät tomaatit uusiin purkkeihin, chilipippurit pärjää ok ja mie pistin salaattia, yrttejä ja vadelmia kasvamaan.



gee, it appears it's been almost exactly a month since i wrote about my little gardening project. it wasn't intentional but i happen to have a gardening update.

it took about 2/3 weeks for the tomatoes i sowed in the seed trays to start peeking out of the dirt. funnily enough they sneakily did it while i was in sheffield zine festing. like nothing when i left and when i got home there was a bunch of green stuff sticking out of the dirt, and they were surprisingly big too! i was super excited and had a good feeling about them but.... they are all dead now. i'm not exactly sure what went wrong. they just got really spindly and long but didn't stay upright? the theory is that they didn't get enough sun. but i couldn't get them anywhere sunnier in the seed trays. the chillies are doing ok, i think cos they are still small enough for me to keep the propagator lid on. i actually need to just chuck the tomato seed trays cos they're making me feel bad D: i did have some more tomatoes growing in a seed pot on the window sill and it's doing super well so it's not all gone wrong! i think seed pots will probably be the way for me, as i can fit them on the actual window sill.

i repotted the beautiful healthy tomato seedlings the day before yesterday because when i got home i noticed that somehow the poor pot had been knocked over and the poor babies were covered in evil dirt! my ma-in-law had told me to not touch the stems when i eventually replant them but it was kinda had not to. replanting was surprisingly hard and i really hope i didn't fuck it up and kill them too. fingers crossed. they seem fine today. though the leaves are still a bit covered in dirt.. oops.

recently i got a little salad mix growing kit from poundland, i think it's been growing for about 2 weeks. i've only got little tiny seedlings peaking out of the compost so far but it's not looking too bad. also the seed pot chilli is doing pretty good. and today i sowed some coriander and basil and finally planted the part grown raspberry shrub my ma-in-law gave me a couple of weeks ago. the last couple of weeks had been if not cold, at least rather windy or a bit miserable so i hadn't felt like going on the balcony. and besides our fence had fallen over in the strong winds. and some other excuse. i still have some crocosmia bulbs to plant but i forgot what i was supposed to do.. not sure that whole fuschias and lupins plan is gonna happen btw. i just... i don't know. i'm honestly not entirely sure what to do once all this needs to come out of the little tubs D: but i think i'm fine for another month at least.

Puutarhassa / In the Garden....

kun me muutettiin tänne meidän 'uuteen' kotiin (onko se ny enää niin uusi kun ollaan täällä oltu täällä viikkoa vaille 9kk) yksi niistä jutuista mistä oli eniten innoissani (keskuslämmityksen lisäksi) oli meidän yllättävän iso parveke ja viimein mahdollisuus pistää pystyyn pieni puutarha. valitettavasti en saanut viime kesänä saanut mahdollisuutta nähdä että olenko viherpeukalo vai... viherpeukalon vastakohta kun me muutettiin tänne kesäkuun puolessa välissä ja sitten alle kaksi viikkoa myöhemmin me lähdettiin suomeen melkein kolmeksi viikoksi ja sitten oli jo heinäkuun puoliväli. siinä vaiheessa on jo vähän liian myöhäistä kylvää yhtään mitään, paitsi ehkä salaattia ja yrttejä. enkä mie saanu sen vertaa aikaiseksi.. ja oli vähän muut asiat mielessä kamoja purkamisen ja uusien huonekalujen hankkimisen kanssa. tänä vuonna mie kasvatan kaikkee! tai no ainakin yritän. tai siis mie aloitan parilla kasvilla. tomaatteja ja chilejä nyt aluksi. sitten jotain kukkia, ja sitten kevväämmällä niitä salaatteja ja yrttejä. ja jos kaikki menee hyvin sitten ensi vuonna vihanneksia, vaikkapa jotain kesäkurpitsoja ja munakoisoja, ehkä myskikurpitsoja (ne on kaikki mun lemppareita, mutta myskikurpitsa on erityisen rakas ja nanna.)

when we moved here to our 'new' home (though i dont know how 'new' it is now that we've been living here a week short of 9 months) one of the things i was most excited about (apart from NEW HOME and central heating) was our surprisingly large balcony and the opportunity to put together a little garden in there! unfortunately i didn't get a chance to do anything about it last year cos we moved in mid-june and less than 2 weeks later we went to finland for almost three weeks and then it was already mid july! by then it was too late to sow anything, except maybe salads or herbs. and i was kind of busy still unpacking and getting the new furniture delivered to even think about salads and herbs. but this year i'm going to grow EVERYTHING! or at least try. or i mean, i'm gonna start slow, with a few things. tomatoes and chillis to begin with. maybe some flowers and maybe strawberries and/or raspberries, and then later on when it gets warmer, i'll grow some of those salads and herbs. and if it goes well, maybe i'll do some proper veg next year, like courgettes and aubergines, maybe even butternut squash. (those are my faves ♥)

mie päätin viime maanantaina että nyt on se viikko kun mie aloitan mun puutarhan, ja menin töiden jälkeen wilkinsoniin kyyläämään niiden puutarhaosastoa ja yritin miettiä että mitä aion kasvattaa. mutta mutta mie en tiiä mitään ja kaikki mun kaupasta ostamat yrtit aina kuolee (ei sen puoleen, ne kuulemma on pistetty purkkiin silleen ettei ne kestä niin ihmiset ostaa uuden..) jote mie olen kysellyt anopilta neuvoa. hänellä on kohtuullisen kokoinen pikku puutarha takapihalla ja hän on alkanut kasvattelemaan vihanneksiakin parin viime vuoden aikana. hänestä on ollut aika lailla apua mutta kyllä se tuntuu silti hieman ylivoimaiselta tehtävältä kun seisoo siinä seinällisen kaikkia eri siemeniä edessä.

last monday i decided that week i would kickstart my garden, and after work i went to wilkinsons to look at their garden stuff and try to decide what to grow and what i needed to do it. but i'm absolutely clueless, i've never grown anything and even my shop bought living herb pots die really quick (then again, apparently they are done so they die quickly anyway so you go and buy another one. ugh capitalism) so i've been talking to carl's mum a lot, picking her brain for advice. she's got a fairly big garden in the back her house and she's been growing vegetables too since we moved out. her advice has made it a little less taunting, but heck it still feels kind of overwhelming. especially standing in front of the wall of seeds in wilkos.

mie kävin lauantaina sitten ostamassa ekat puutarha vermeet: multaa (tietty) pari istutuslaatikkoa & niiden sisälaatikoita. ja siemeniä. nyt tähän hätään ostin kahta eri tomaattia (gardener's delight ja roma vf) ja hot patio sizzle chilejä. mie olin jo ostanu maanantaina katsellessa cayenne chili siemeniä jotka tuli purkin ja mullan kanssa. ja kun olin tullut kotiin ja syönyt hieman lounasta, mie pistin Bitch Planet teemaisen spotify soittolistan soimaan kovaan ääneen ja menin parvekkeelle kylvämään. jollain ihme logiikalla olin ostanut vain kaksi istutus laatikkoa ja yhden kannen vaikka oli kolme sisälaatikkoa ja kolme pussukkaa siemeniä. joten kylvin tomaatit koska ne olivat jo ehkä hieman myöhässä (ois voinu jo 2kk sitten alkaa kylvämään) ja toisen laatikon kanneksi meni väliaikaisesti muovipussi (anoppi ehdotus, niin kosteus pysyy sisäpuolella tjsp. kuulemma ok ratkaisu kunhan ei kassi kosketa maata/multaa) nyt vaan pitää odottaa pari viikkoa ja ehkä sieltä kasvaa jotain? toivottavasti. sunnuntaina kävin tauolla hakemassa lisää aluslaatikoita ja kansia mutta en kerennyt kylvää mitään ennen pimeän ja kylmän tuloa. ostin myös tomaatteja purkissa samaan tyyliin kuin cayennet kun epäilytti että olin tehnyt jotain väärin tomaattien kanssa. luulin ostaneeni kolmatta lajiketta mutta näyttää siltä että nappasin vahingossa lisää gardener's delightia. hups. nyt on kaikki kylvetty ja ne istuvat olohuoneen ikkunan edessä pienen kärryn päällä (purkit ikkunalaudalla) kun ulkona on vielä liian kylmä niille.

i went out on saturday to purchase my first garden bits: compost (duh) couple of cheap propagator bits (basically box with a lid for the seed trays to keep moisture inside) a pack of 3 seed tray and some seeds. for now, i went with two kinds of tomatoes (gardener's delight & roma vf) and hot patio sizzle chillis. when i was having a looksie on monday, i had also got a seed pot (one that comes with dirt in the pot already...) of (hot) de cayenne peppers. once i got home and had eaten some lunch, i put a Bitch Planet themed spotify playlist on extra loud so i could hear it on the balcony and got sowing. for some reason i'd only got 2 trays and one lid, so i only sowed the tomatoes since i was already bordering on a little late for sowing them, (could have done it two months ago, but it's ok to do as late as april apparently) and improvised a carrier bag around the second tray, to keep the moisture in. according to ma-in-law that works fine, as long as the bag doesnt touch the dirt) on sunday i got a third tray and more lids on my lunch break as well as a seed pot of what i thought was a third tomato breed but it turns out i had just grabbed more gardener's delight. whoops. now it's all sown, and the trays are on a little trolley in front of the living room window, while the pots live on the window sill as it's still too cold outside for them.

ensi viikolla kun olen takaisin sheffieldistä ajattelin käydä hakemassa verenpisaroiden ja ehkä myös begonioiden ja lupiinien alkuja / sipuleita. niin ja ajattelin pistää myös mansikoita ja vadelmia kasvamaan..

next week when i'm back from sheffield, i thought i might go get some of the multicolour fuschia plug plants and maybe also begonia and lupin bulbs, and beginning of strawberries and/or raspberries, but who knows..... i've put links below to what i got from wilkos to get started, if you are interested:
